What inspired you to start your company?

In 2008 my twin brother Dom and I were grinding away in NYC, living together. iPhone just launched the year before and we realized that “hey, there are no experts for the iPhone, and everyone needs help.” So we quickly applied our holistic process and started building iOS applications with very little reservation. Through intense focus and muscle, we won awards and we launched applications for our clients that literally have millions of downloads ( and Hearst 17 Magazine, to name a few.) We hired like-minded people – fiercely smart and hungry –  and to this day we have a teams in New York, Chicago, and LA all focused on making awesome products and solving problems.

What advice do you have for agency producers or creatives?

In my experience it’s better to be on-time and show work-in-progress than to be late with a masterpiece. That’s not always true, but relationships are built on trust and nothing destroys trust more than missing a deadline.

What do you make of the trend where brands are skipping their agency of record to work directly with production partners?

It’s smart and I’ll explain in a short story. When first starting DOM & TOM, I had the opportunity to visit Taiwan and stay with an executive of an airlines. During my stay he took me around the airline training facilities, checked out the simulation rooms, and walked through the hangers. Everything was 100% state-of-the-art and made in Taiwan. Then we went to downtown Taipei, and the executive took me to their equivalent of a dollar store. He showed me that everything in the store was made in Taiwan. His point was that in order to innovate on the big things, you had to innovate and understand them on the smallest, functional level. It’s a lesson we apply with all our clients.

What is the best thing about working at DOM & TOM INC?

In this order: the people, the clients, the work.

Where is the best bar in New York?

Best bars is hands down Blarney Stones in the Financial District. They respect the buy-back; they appreciate low-grade whiskey (Powers), and they do not water the drinks down.
