What inspired you to start your company?

Cramer was founded by the assistant captain of the 1964 United States Olympic Hockey team. Tom “Red” Martin was working as a national sales manager of Cramer Electronics when the company was acquired by Arrow Electronics in 1979. Martin, on a hunch, purchased the firm’s budding video production and equipment division, calling it Cramer Productions. Armed with a creative vision for where the industry was headed, a passion for building teams, and an innate drive to succeed, Tom brought the marketing studio— today known simply as Cramer—to life.

What was the most technically challenging work you’ve created?

Last spring, Cramer produced and executed HxGNLIVE 2014. The event took over the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with more than 3,500 employees in attendance from five divisions of Hexagon, representing over 70 countries. The 135’ x 40’ stage was dynamically projection mapped with seven zones for fully immersive, mind-blowing visual effects that left both the top row of the stadium and the 7,000+ livestream viewers in awe. Check out how we pulled it together.

How has the business changed since you started?

Cramer started out in equipment sales and installation until in the early 1980s, when Martin formed the creative production arm with five people. Fun fact—33 years later, four of the five are still key drivers of the company. The business evolved into offering event staging and production services, which, coupled with creative and media production capabilities, made Cramer an event production resource of choice for numerous national brands and organizations. The business continued to grow with small acquisitions in the graphic design, digital marketing, and event management areas, and after years of success and growth, Cramer purchased a 70,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Norwood, Massachusetts, turning it into a state-of-the-art marketing studio.

What do you make of the trend where brands are skipping their agency of record to work directly with production partners?

For us, it’s an exciting time to be in the business! Cramer grew up as an agency rooted in production. This means we’re a highly skilled, flexible bunch that can turn a video project on a dime or work strategically on year-long content marketing initiatives, and that makes our company uniquely positioned to take on both agency of record and production partner relationships.

What is the best thing about working at Cramer?

The best part of working at Cramer is the pure culture of teamwork and success, driven by accountability that exists deep within the DNA of the organization. If anyone knows how to build teams, it’s an Olympic team captain. And the Cramer team is proof. Everybody works their butts off to go above and beyond not only what our clients expect, but also what we expect of one another. This mentality keeps your feet moving fast and your sights set high on a daily basis.
