Find the perfect partner.

VendorDB is the comprehensive database of companies and service providers for the creative industries.

Month: November 2014

The First Six Months

We created VendorDB with the hope of simply making it easier to find and keep track of the great companies we partner with.

As long-time agency veterans, we know how tough it can be to find masters of the latest tech, or determine who to call for help when plans change, or how to manage a last minute triple-bid request. We were tired of the hand-me-down Excel file full of incomplete information and Google searches that usually came up empty.

Let’s not even get started on the various ‘comprehensive’ industry directories out there. Not only are they clunky, confusing and often fail to answer basic queries, most like to charge for the privilege of being listed. That’s just silly.

We honestly had no idea what to expect when we launched back in May but we knew that if we dealt with this problem on a regular basis, there might be a few other folks out there who did as well. As Fred Wilson says, the unselfish thing to do is to script for others, you never know who will face the same problem as you.

It looks like our hunch was right.

In the 6 months since launch we’ve seen users from over 100 countries (exactly 103 as of today) and an astounding number of vendors, agencies and brands.

Better yet, a surprising number of you have been kind enough to take time out of your day to sign in and leave a review for one or more of the companies that make VendorDB great. We sincerely thank you for that.

If you’re curious, here are the current top 10 countries:

1) United States 6) Sweden
2) Canada 7) Netherlands
3) United Kingdom 8) Brazil
4) India 9) France
5) Australia 10) Germany

We’ve got some fantastic things planned for 2015 but before we close out the year, we’ve got one more feature just about ready to go…

Want to know if your profile page is worth the $0.00 you’re spending on it?

Yeah, we knew you did.

In the coming weeks we’ll be rolling out profile metrics to all page managers. Just like Facebook, LinkedIn and the other big guys, we believe that you should see exactly how you benefit from maintaining a profile on our platform.

And while we can’t promise tons of traffic for everyone (for now), we can promise transparency and actual usage data which is whole lot more than you get from those other sites.

More specifics will be released in the near future but for now we can tell you that you’ll be able to see an in-depth snapshot of your profile’s activity over the previous 90 days. So if you haven’t already claimed your profile, there’s really no excuse not to (it is FREE after all).

The first six months have been an amazing ride and we look forward to continuing to help each and every one of you find amazing partners to work with.

What inspired you to start your company?

I wanted to see growth. I wanted to help others. I wanted to build a nice life for my family. The best way for me to do that and achieve my own personal goals was to do something myself that I could influence the outcome and the income.

Why Canada?

The great media visionary Israel Asper once said, why not Winnipeg to run a global company as he started the Global Television Network in Winnipeg. That is why they created airplanes.

Though we are based in Manitoba, our team of 400+ is global. With employees all over the world, we are 100% remote. Our unique, virtual work model improves the lives of all of our team members on several levels. They are able to spend more time with their children, spend less time commuting and have the ability to focus on results in the comfortable environments of their own homes. Learn more about our unique approach.

What was the first job someone hired you for?

Selling Something. Literally that, just selling something. I started in sales.

Which work or brand are you best known for?

The entire country of Canada and beyond knows ICUC manages and moderates the CBC comments. It is controversial and high profile.

How has the business changed since you started?

We have 40 x more people. The volume of content that the world creates and contributes never fails to amaze me and the growth we have experienced is a big change. The business is less risk averse and more open to dialog instead of censorship.

What emerging tech trend will have the biggest impact on your business?

What advice do you have for agency producers or creatives?

Be real and stay on focus. Too many agencies and creatives try to do too much when they could win even more by focusing on a core ability or strength. Less is always more.

What do you make of the trend where brands are skipping their agency of record to work directly with production partners?

It is inevitable. Why do you need all of the additional overhead of an AOR? Technology has changed everything.

What is the best thing about working at ICUC?

The culture.

Where is the best bar in Winnipeg?

Not Telling. It is our secret 😉

Any wild company party stories?

Every company story is a wild party story.

What does the future look like for ICUC?

More trips to Las Vegas.

Advertising Veterans Launch As A New Comprehensive Resource For Creative Industries

Free Site Provides Detailed Company Information, Ratings and Peer Reviews

NEW YORK, 11 November, 2014 – As the number of capabilities and services offered by agencies worldwide—large and small, independent or networked-owned—increases, two advertising industry veterans publicly launch today, a comprehensive database of companies in the creative industries that aims to simplify the process of finding vendors at no cost to the user or service provider.

Founded by Daniel Murphy and Chris Kief, VendorDB soft-launched this past June, and since then, the site has already seen users from over 100 countries and amassed more than 3000 company profiles. Both founders have over 20 years of experience in the creative and technology industries, and the creation of VendorDB comes with insights seen from both respective sectors over this period of time.

“Over the past 10 years, the types of projects agencies are executing has exploded. From mobile apps and street painting robots to projection mapping on buildings and product fabrication.” said Chris Kief. “And not coincidentally, the number of firms providing these specialized services has also ballooned. It’s our goal to enable users to quickly find these companies, no matter how extraordinary the need.” he also added.

For Daniel Murphy, “Having produced hundreds of jobs ourselves for leading agencies, such as TBWA, BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, CP+B and Eleven, we know first-hand the importance of finding the right partner for a project. Our mission is simple – help producers, creatives and those involved in the creative production process research and find the best company for the job.”

While there are a number of advertising related directories in existence, VendorDB’s point of difference comes from their focus on providing solutions based on what users are trying to create. With VendorDB, users can search by company name, location and most importantly, deliverable.

The public release comes with the ability for users to add and self-manage their company profiles directly. The platform offers a number of great features that makes vendor search fast and easy:

  • Comprehensive directory containing broadcast, interactive, print, radio, experiential companies and more.
  • Find companies with highly specialized services.
  • Search by deliverable or keyword.
  • Browse by skill-based tags.
  • Read reviews from industry peers.

Whether it be banner ads, sound design or augmented reality, users are provided with a detailed set of results that is targeted to address their specific needs. VendorDB also understands the need for authenticity on its platform, so it requires all users to sign in via LinkedIn before leaving any comments. And all of this is done with exceptional design and device-agnostic usability at the core of the experience.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the response from companies around the globe. There are so many talented folks out there making amazingly creative work. VendorDB is all about them, their work, and helping everyone find the perfect partner,” Murphy added.

Nancy Jacobs

The Vitals

Name: Nancy Jacobs
Locations: New York City
Specialties: matchmaker extraordinaire

What inspired you to start your company?

I started my company right out of college. I was fired from every job I ever had and I figured it was a sink or swim situation.

Why New York City?

My first office was on Madison Ave. I was born in the Bronx raised in Queens, and got married had my kids in NYC where else would I be?

What are you best known for?

I was the ” Queen Of Animation” for years , then I moved heavily into digital. Now I am technique and platform Agnostic.

Who do you most like working with?

Over the past year I have put together the teams who created  campaigns for Avis, Pepsi,  Cadillac, Iskream, Vital choice, Windowsworld, , Zappos, Bare Necessities as well as the  live event projection in Herald Square for JC Penny Christmas, and a TV show that will air later this year.

How has the business changed since you started?

The business has changed in so many ways. Even the most obvious things like what communications modality is most effective in sales. But what has not changed is the need for those that work in the business to understand that above all we are a service business.  To be a creative and be of service is a vulnerable place to live and work.

Nancy Jacobs

What do you make of the trend where brands are skipping their agency of record to work directly with production partners?

In the past year about half my business is client direct that is a huge shift for me and my clients.

What does the future look like for you?

I would like my company to evolve to tell more stories that help heal, and inspire a nervous world.

Any new shop we should know about on VendorDB?

If I would like to introduce you to anyone its the pack of dogs 300 pounds of them that share my space and life.
